Seguridad

Antes de instalar ninguna modificación, por favor ten en cuenta que las modificaciones no reciben soporte oficial de Minecraft. Sin embargo, está planeado que se publique una API oficial que permita las modificaciones, y que incluya el código fuente completo. Más información aquí.

No se debe intentar instalar nunca una modificación sobre el juego o sobre un servidor, a menos que ésta se haya actualizado para que corresponda exactamente con la versión que se va a ejecutar (ver columna "Compatible con la versión" de la tabla de más abajo). Incluso el mas pequeño desfase entre versiones puede ser suficiente para causar problemas, incluyendo cuelgues de sistema y corrupción de archivos. (NOTA: Si nombras un mapa de la misma manera que uno que se haya borrado, el personaje se volverá a generar en el escenario borrado, pero sin ningun objeto en su inventario). Las modificaciones suelen estar desactualizadas durante un periodo de tiempo indeterminado después de que se actualice el juego (ese tiempo depende de lo que tarde el creador de la modificación, o alguno de sus colaboradores en ponerse a ello), y en ese periodo de tiempo no es del todo seguro hacer uso de las modificaciones.

Las modificaciones que sólo alteran el aspecto de los objetos, bloques o criaturas existentes suelen ser bastante seguros. Normalmente se pueden instalar y desinstalar sin que se produzca corrupción de archivos (excepto si existen estructuras que requieran de los aspectos añadidos en la modificación, en ese caso el juego no funcionará si ella). También suelen ser seguras las modificaciones que incluyen nuevas recetas para manufacturar, si no incluyen objetos o bloques nuevos.

Las modificaciones que añaden objetos, bloques o criaturas al juego no son seguros de desinstalar. Una vez que se ha salvado una partida que incluya alguna de esas cosas en el escenario, no se puede volver a jugar a ella sin la modificación bajo riesgo de cuelgue o corrupción. (si se desea desinstalar una modificación hay pensar en ignorar las partidas previamente guardadas, asegurarse de destruir todos los objetos, bloques y criaturas añadidos que existan en el escenario, o usar una aplicación como MCEdit para borrar los bloques después de desinstalar la modificación. Para inventarios corruptos se puede utilizar INVedit). Actualizar el juego cuenta como desinstalar las modificaciones y se recomienda reisntalar la varsión actualizada de la modificación.

Mods that change how chunks are saved will render saved worlds incompatible with 3rd party software not designed to work with them. An example of such tools are map rendering tools, such as Cartograph G, that rely on parsing save files to produce their end results.

Multiple mods may conflict with each other; certainly if two mods need to alter the same files, then they are unlikely to be compatible.

Client Mods

Client Mods are modifications to your Minecraft program (Alpha or Beta). They are not custom clients, and require modification of minecraft.jar. Like high resolution textures, they only work with the launchers, and won't work if you play Beta through a browser.

The most common form of client mods are aesthetic and/or functional. However, some client mods add content to the game, and others fix issues with the game. While some do work on SMP, mods that add content, and thus could be used for griefing, do not work, as the server will ignore custom content.

Server Mods

Server Mods are modifications to the official Minecraft server software. They generally fall into two broad categories: management and gameplay.

Management mods are commonly designed to make administration of servers easier by implementing tiered privileges for commands (such as kicking, banning etc.). They are frequently implemented as "wrappers" which do not actually modify the main server .jar file, instead monitoring its output and sending commands to it.

Gameplay mods are modifications to actual game mechanics, such as restricting the placement of blocks commonly abused by Griefers (e.g. lava, TNT), fixing bugs in the server (e.g. making furnaces function before the update of 10th of September 2010) or adding new gameplay features.
